Open Enrollment 2027: the dates, and what to do if you're young

Open enrollment has three dates, and most people only remember the last one. That's the one that costs you January. Here's the deadline to watch, who it applies to, and who doesn't have to wait.

Quick answer

Marketplace open enrollment for 2027 runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. The date that matters most is December 15: enroll by then and your coverage starts January 1. If you're healthy and earn too much for a subsidy, a private plan doesn't have to wait for any of these dates, though it asks health questions and can say no.

The three dates

DateWhat happens
November 1, 2026Open enrollment opens. You can shop and apply for 2027 Marketplace plans.
December 15, 2026Last day to enroll or switch for coverage starting January 1, 2027. Then pay your first premium by the insurer's due date.
January 15, 2027Last day to enroll for 2027. After this, you need a qualifying life event to get a Marketplace plan.

These are the HealthCare.gov dates. Some states run their own marketplace and set their own deadlines, so check yours if you're not on HealthCare.gov.

My advice: treat December 15 as the real deadline. Enrolling after it means a later start date, and a gap in January is a risk you don't need.

Does open enrollment even apply to you?

Open enrollment is a Marketplace rule. Whether it matters to you depends on where your coverage comes from:

Five things to check before December 15

1. Your 2027 price, not your 2026 price

Plans and prices change every year. If you're on a Marketplace plan, it may renew on its own at a new price, or your plan may change. Log in and look instead of letting it roll over.

2. Your income estimate

Marketplace subsidies are based on what you expect to earn in 2027. If you're self-employed and your income jumped this year, update your estimate. If you end up earning more than you estimated, you repay the extra subsidy at tax time, with no cap starting in 2026.

3. Whether you'd qualify for help at all

If your income is too high for a subsidy, you pay full price on the Marketplace. For a healthy person in their 20s or early 30s, that's the moment to compare a private plan, which is priced on your age and health instead.

4. Your doctors and network

Many Marketplace plans are HMOs or EPOs with local networks. If you travel, work in more than one area, or want to see specialists without referrals, check the network before you pick on price.

5. Your work plan's enrollment window

If you're on a work plan you think is too expensive, find out when your employer's enrollment closes. That's usually your only chance this year to drop it without a life event.

Missed January 15? What's still open

After January 15, you can only get a Marketplace plan with a qualifying life event, like losing other coverage, moving, getting married, or having a baby. Private plans are still an option for many healthy people, since they don't follow the open enrollment calendar. They can decline applicants and may exclude pre-existing conditions, so they're not a fit for everyone.

A simple October-to-December plan

  1. Now through October: figure out your 2027 income estimate and what you're paying today.
  2. November 1 to December 15: compare Marketplace and private options side by side and enroll.
  3. By December 15: enroll so you're covered January 1, then pay your first premium by the insurer's due date.

Where I land

Aim for December 15, not January 15. If you're on a Marketplace plan, look at your 2027 price instead of letting it renew blind. If you're on a work plan you think costs too much, your employer's enrollment window is the one that matters. And if you're healthy and earn too much for help, you can compare a private plan today.

Questions I get

When is open enrollment for 2027 health insurance?+

For HealthCare.gov states, it opens November 1, 2026. Enroll by December 15 for coverage that starts January 1, 2027. The last day to enroll is January 15, 2027. Some states run their own marketplace with different dates, so check yours.

Do I have to wait for open enrollment to get health insurance?+

Not always. Marketplace plans need open enrollment or a qualifying life event, but private medically underwritten plans can usually be bought any month. Employer plans follow your employer's own enrollment period.

Will my Marketplace plan renew automatically?+

Often it does, but your price and the plan itself can change for the new year, and your subsidy may change if your income did. Log in and compare during open enrollment instead of letting it roll over blind.

Is my employer's open enrollment the same thing?+

No. Your employer sets its own enrollment window, often in the fall. That's usually the only time you can drop or change your work plan without a life event, so it's also the time to compare private options.
